The problem with this etymology is that mantras are not used to think as implied by the √man + tra derivation. Vedic mantrayate is probably denominative and means "to advise, negotiate". Originally mantra is a hymn of praise to a deity. The relation to Avestan mathra (word, speech, spell) only reinforces the sense of wrongness.Jayarava (talk) 12:14, 9 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
