- Which form is جَلْهَم (jalham, “yellowberry”) from? The l/r variation and transposition with x or h is of course Iranian. Its origin I found by that of Ottoman Turkish جهری (cehri, “yellowberry”)
- What is the exact motivation to call these plants by the wheel? Do they look wheely? Or is spinning closely connected to dyeing?
- Or has one mixed up two things and this plant name is a wholly separate word, @Victar? For indeed جَلْهَم (jalham, “yellowberry”) is too peripherally attested for etymologists to find, and if one knows more forms perhaps a new picture arises. Fay Freak (talk) 15:55, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Fay Freak: Oof, yeah, that etymology is hecka dubious. I also find no such word in MP, as suggested at جلهم. I wonder if instead this is a Turkic word, compare Proto-Turkic *jāĺɨl (“green, yellow; greens, vegetables”), which was borrowed into Western Mongolian as [script needed] (jasil, “buckthorn”). --
