@Rhemmiel: Thanks for the explanation given when you moved the page title. Could you please incorporate that into the entry itself? I'm asking because in creating the PAA entry, I saw that the EDE discusses the controversy, and points out that a glottal stop makes more sense given the external evidence. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:16, 20 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Metaknowledge: The thing with the regular outcome of an ending -āy- is right, see also Reconstruction talk:Proto-Semitic/šamāy-. The consonant sequence مَاي (māy) is impossible for Arabic words. āy and āw in the end, e. g. patterns from a root ultimatae wāw or yāʾ, must become āʾ.
