Connection to Ger. *wrekaną[edit]

The Balto-Slavic/Greek root and Proto-Germanic *wrekaną are very similar in meaning. It is possible that both were extensions of the basic root Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to twist, to turn) via different morphemes. The Balto-Slavic one probably reflects a 0-grade stative *wreh₁- extended with -ģ-, while the Germanic lemma simply reflects a -g/ģ- extension. If correct, then Proto-Slavic *rǫka (hand) as well as various verbs for rotation, binding, brewing, lying (*vьrtěti, *vьrzati, *vьrěti, *vьrаti) are also related.
