What was the proto-Turkic predecessor of Qalay, meaning how, which occurs in many Turkic languages today? According to the page for the Bashkir ҡалай (qalay), it is indeed from a derivation of the proto-Turkic *ka-. Thus, would it not be logical to include it here as well? For other examples of it, see: Kazakh қалай (qalai), Karachay-Balkar къалай (qalay), Uzbek qalay and qanday, Kyrgyz кандай (kanday), Chagatai قلای (qalay) and قندای (qanday), Karakalpak қалай (qalay), Altai канай (kanay) Uighur قانداق (qandaq), Tuvan кандыг (kandıg), Nogay калай (kalay), Chulym [script needed] (qaydïɣ), Sakha хайдах (qaydaq), and Siberian Tatar ҡалай (qalay), all of which mean "how." @Ardahan Karabağ Samiollah1357 (talk) 19:51, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- I think forms such as qalay, qanay are inherited from PT *kanlayu. *-layu being similarity denoting suffix, equivalent to English -like/-ly. Thus, *kanlayu probably meant "What-like?"
- Forms such as qandaq, kandıg, qaydaq could be inherited from PT *kandag. *dag, comes from *teg, which means "like, as" Ardahan Karabağ (talk) 13:26, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
