Etymology[edit]

From German Low German and Middle Low German rīge, ultimately from a derivative of Proto-Germanic *raih- (row, line).

Cognate with Middle High German rīge (line, row, array). Originating from Northern Germany, Friedrich Jahn, a German gymnastics educator and nationalist, introduced this Low German term in the early 19th century.
