Proposed etymologies include a compound of riet (“reed, Phragmites communis”) and lo (“light forest”), Proto-Celtic *rigodulum (“royal forest”), Latin rigola (“watercourse”), a term cognate to Old High German rigil (“ridge, bannister”) or Old High German *rîdel (“small stream”), none of which match the oldest attestations neither morphologically nor semantically.
