Brand name, attested since at least the early 1900s, from Santalum or santalum (which see for other related terms).

  1. (medicine) A particular brand of collagenase ointment.
    • 1909, Adolf Baginsky, Jacob Snowman, Folia Therapeutica: A Periodical Journal Relating to Modern Therapeutics and Pharmacology for Medical Practitioners:
      Santyl is excreted in a form more allied to sulphates and glycoll; it is more fully oxidized and its products are unirritating. Some experiments recently conducted with Santyl tablets show that these are absorbed almost as quickly as Santyl drops []
