Etymology[edit]

Originally in the obsolete form of Schrittschuh (step shoe, pace shoe), from Schritt +‎ Schuh, an old compound already attested in Old High German scritescuoh. Remodelled in modern German by association with Schlitten (sleigh). Compare Swedish skridsko.
