Etymology[edit]
Ancient Greek σκληρός (sklērós, “hard, stiff, cruel”) or Ancient Greek σκληρία (sklēría, “hardness”), in reference to the hard seeds or in reference to the use of bundles of the plant to whip slaves in Surinam.
