Etymology[edit]

Shoebury Ness is a ness (flat headland) in the Thames Estuary, on the southern edge of the town. Shoebury is from Old English scēo + burh (fortress providing shelter), recorded as Sceobyrig early 10th century, Soberia in 1086 (DB), and Shoberynesse in the 16th century.
