Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Sicilian Stefanu, from Latin Stephanus, from Ancient Greek Στέφανος (Stéphanos). Being an early borrowing, the word shows the regular phonetic development, i.e. loss of internal unstressed vowels and raising of the imala vowel.
