- Borrowed from Austrian German Supan, an occupational surname for an administrator in a Slavic-speaking region. Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *županъ, from *župa (“area, district”).
- Germanized form of Slovene Zupan, from Proto-Slavic *županъ, from *župa (“area, district”).
- Borrowed from Tagalog Supan, a surname predominantly found in Central Luzon region.
