Dear @Saltmarsh, about the second Ety "avoid to attract attention": is there a source for it? I don't know it at all.
The senses+etymologies i see are from Georgakas where 1 ="appear" is very rare -I don't know if it is usefull to include it here, perhaps a bit confusing for readers-. (DSMG has only the usual sense "give opinion, verdict") -There are also mediaeval and ancient senses for ἀποφαίνω (apophaínō)

@Saltmarsh. Are you sure that Stavropoulos says 'stay at background, do not attrack attention'? I cannot believe it!! It means exactly the opposite as per Georgakas. Let me check some more dictionaries. Thanks. ‑‑Sarri.greek ^♫ I 10:29, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Ι have checked 4 dictionaries, plus 2 mediaeval and https://logeion.uchicago.edu/ἀποφαίνω. There is absolutely no sense "do not attract attention". But on the contrary, as Georgakas puts it.

φαίνομαι = I seem, I appear. The prefix απο- for this rare second sense adds a nuance "finally appear, after thought it appears, after some kind of procedure is concluded it appears that.." Georgakas gives many quotations. So does {{R:Dimitrakos 1964}}. ‑‑Sarri.greek ^♫ I 10:51, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

@Sarri.greek: S/he has 2 entries for the word, the 2nd is labelled "chiefly negative" (κυρ. αρνητ.) has 2 glosses — I have quoted usage examples against each of them:

1: not to attract attention, keep in the background.

2: not feel it, not to look it

A!! I just saw the examples. @Saltmarsh. They are exactly the examples used for the definitions

• not to attract attention, keep in the background = seem, appear
• not to feel/look it = give the impression

It is just, that this English description of the meaning to me was a very different meaning. I would never understand

• seem to be with 'keep in the background' which would be for words like κρύβομαι, ελοχεύω.
• And "not to feel", for me would be είμαι αναίσθητος, or i [[pretend[ to be
