I suppose the adjective is the short form neuter?

No, лучший doesn’t have short forms. лучше originated in Old Russian as the comparative degree of лучший, but now it’s the comparative of an unrelated word, хороший. Most comparatives have the ending -ее (colloquially -ей; e.g., аккуратнее or аккуратней from аккуратный), but some such as лучше have only -е for an ending. The comparative, although it looks something like a neuter singular nominative, is indeclinable and is used for all genders and numbers. The object of comparison is in the genitive, used predicatively: он лучше моего брата (he’s better than my brother). —Stephen 00:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
