Is this page in the category ru:Vulgarities because it's related to that?  I guess I'm wondering because there's nothing vulgar at all about the word мат. &mdash V-ball 13:18, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

No, it’s that the word мат in the sense of scurrilous abuse is vulgar in and of itself. It’s not nearly as bad as the words that it is a euphemism for, but, like English mofo, it’s not for use in polite society. —Stephen 05:25, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm . . . this is a new ideea to me.  As I have looked through dictionaries, I have never seen the word мат denoted as vulgar (a couple examples might be the Словарь русского языка (МАС) and ABBYY Lingvo 12).  Also, while living in Russia, I never got the feeling the word was vulgar at all.  The word is somewhat colloquial, but it means nothing more than "foul language," "swearing," "curse words," or any other such English word or phrase.  Maybe one of the native Russians here can weigh in, but I'll stick by my never having experienced that word as vulgar. —  V-ball 14:00, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I would not say that the word мат itself is vulgar. Perhaps, it may be perceived as somewhat strong, and is often euphemized (нецензурная брань, непечатная ругань), but I doubt that it should be tagged as vulgar. Dart evader 14:35, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
