@Calak: Asatrian treats the Persian in his 2011 dictionary, page 222. What does he say? I don't like Martirosyan's etymology. Perhaps we can look for an Iranian origin. --Vahag (talk) 11:25, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Compare Persian kanand, Baxtiari kaland-, from the root *kan- "to dig" with verbal suffix *-ant/*-ņt; so it means "digger".--Calak (talk) 11:34, 11 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
