Hmm, I checked Strong's Concordance and the definitions don't match?

Yes, this is a tricky one. I believe the original sense was "to be/make conspicuous", which developed into "to be in front of", which developed into "to be opposite", which developed into "to be opposed". Of course that's for the root. This form may be restricted to one part of the semantic range, in which case the Strong's Concordance link would need to be moved. In the Bible, the pa'al (Qal) form does not exist, which is why Strong's only defines the hif'il (Hiphil) form הִגִּיד (higíd) and huf'al (Hophal) form הוגד / הֻגַּד (hugád).
