isn't this the hebrew word for "sefardi", the western jews as opposed to "ashkenazi", the eastern jews? or does it carry both meanings? — Hippietrail 00:58, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Yes. The western Jews were calld sephardi, or Spanish, because that's where they lived. Similarly, ashkenazi means "German". —Muke Tever 05:52, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)
