क्रन्दति (krandati)[edit]

@Svartava2 Wouldn't this be ultimately (borrowed) from Pali karuṇā / Sanskrit करुणा (karuṇā), करुण (karuṇa) perhaps through Sinhala/Sinhalese කරුණ (karuṇa) rather being the equivalent of Md. ken̆denī ʻ importunes ʼ in CDIAL? Kutchkutch (talk) 10:46, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Kutchkutch yes. There is no dhivehi descendant at [1]. Not sure that pali is involved of not. Svartava2 (talk) 12:33, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Svartava2: Direct borrowings from Sanskrit in modern Dhivehi would not be expected since it is isolated from mainland South Asia, and the Maldives has been a predominantly Islamic country since the 12th century. If there are terms borrowed from Sanskrit, they might be from the preceding Buddhist era: Buddhism in the Maldives. Kutchkutch (talk) 10:46, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kutchkutch I added Pali. Would that be correct? Svartava2 (talk) 13:31, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Svartava2: ނިރުމަލަ (nirumala)निर्मल (nirmala) suggests that direct borrowings from Sanskrit may be possible. Kutchkutch (talk) 11:03, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kutchkutch: in the absence of any source saying that pali was involved or Pali being a source for a lot of loans in dhivehi, we could just say borrowed from Sanskrit. Svartava2 (talk) 11:19, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
