@Per utramque cavernam: Well, the root is व्यञ्ज् (vyañj) which means among other things, "to be manifest/to be visible/to appear". There are related terms like व्यक्त (vyakta) which mean "discernible", "perceptible by the senses", "distinct", "distinguished". This is why व्यञ्जन (vyañjana) is used to refer to a consonant - having a clear and distinguishable sound. -- माधवपंडित (talk) 02:00, 23 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
