From Middle Chinese[edit]

@Wyang, Octahedron80, can we be sure that the Proto-Tai comes from Middle Chinese? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 05:46, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung, Octahedron80 I think it is quite likely. Pittayaporn (2014), “Layers of Chinese Loanwords in Proto- Southwestern Tai as Evidence for the Dating of the Spread of Southwestern Tai” also says:

The PSWT forms *ɣɛːŋB ‘shin’ and *ɣɔːA ‘throat’ reflect the change from *ɡ- to EMC *ɣ- that occurred sometime after LH, indicating that they were borrowed from EMC.

PT that has Ahom (the oldest and extinct language; was spoken around present Assam) in the list usually comes from Middle Chinese. If Khmer is also cognate with it, then they both likely come from Old Chinese. --Octahedron80 (talk) 02:15, 17 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
