Why not from *Hwel-ikos? Cf. PSl. *velikъ. 5.141.126.191 23:51, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
- *h₂welh₁- might be expected to yield ἀϝελε- (awele-) → (loss of w and contraction) ᾱ̓λε (āle) → (Attic–Ionic shift) ἠλε- (ēle-). The initial h in the Greek would then be unexplained. — Eru·tuon 00:21, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
