What evidence is there that マンゴー comes form the English word rather than Mandarin "mángguǒ"?

Well, it's closer phonetically to the English than to the Mandarin. There might be another topolect that's closer, though. Japanese has borrowed other plant names from English even when there are older names available from neighboring languages (オレンジ (orenji) for instance), so it wouldn't be that much of an anomaly.
