Etymology[edit]

Is this from Chinese, or is this one of the Japanese coinages from the Meiji Period, such as 生理 or 経済? -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 22:20, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

@Eirikr: Why would it be borrowed from Japanese? For the age/era/period sense, there are attestations in the 漢書 and 三國志. ---> Tooironic (talk) 02:02, 4 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Tooironic: I had some question at the time if this might have been one of the repurposed terms, like Japanese 社会, 自由, etc. I've got access to better sources now, and I've added in the earliest date of Japanese use that I can find (early 1500s), clearly indicating that this is not a Meiji Period coinage / re-definition.
