Etymology

Quite a few of the related non-Germanic languages ended up using accusative forms to fill a similar role, just like West Germanic did with *þat. In view of the Germanic restructuring of original feminine nominative *ī and accusative *į̄ or *ijų, it would be safe to bet that this is what ended up happening to the inherited forms. Actually, Miller in The Oxford Gothic Grammar, 2019, page 432, gives the Gothic particle ei as deriving from PIE *h₂íh₂i referencing "LIPP 2.339, 347" (Lexikon der indogermanischen Partikeln und Pronominal-stämme, which I don't have access to to find out more). Then, following the normal sound laws found here, it seems PIE *h₂íh₂i would yield Proto-Germanic *î, which, following Fulk 2018 page 85 and Agee 2018 page 80, both following Ringe 2017 page 91 (2006:75), would give Gothic ei. So Go. ei < PGmc *î < PIE *h₂íh₂i. Pannakooko (talk) 23:10, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
