@Surjection, I think you are being rash here. Many scientific names have been around for several centuries and some predate even Linné's nomenclature and many vernaculars actually descend from them. The fact that it's the same name in so many different languages is already suspicious. The scientific name certainly comes from a vernacular term but only in one language. The translingual entries are specifically for the taxonomic name, which clearly cannot predate Linnaeus. The extraordinary claim here is not "the taxonomic name is based on vernacular names", but "the vernacular names are calqued from the taxonomic name", especially for a plant like this that has been known for centuries (as opposed to, say, a species that hasn't been anywhere near Europe until perhaps the last few decades).
