In Japan, a Dutch Wife (pronounced Dutchy-OoWifu) refers specifically to a sex doll. Many of these sex dolls are crafted with meticulous care, are anatomically correct (without internal organs, such as kidneys, gall bladders, etc), and cost thousands of dollars. There have been cases where a dutch wife was mistaken for a dead body, and police were called to investigate. A writer's handbook themed around dutch wives, called Dutch Wife Chronicles, was written by Paul Blair and David Moscovich published by Mummaliga Press in 2008.

- In Japanese, spelling as is known in English does not exist. Japanese is a phonetic language, so to break it down in phonemes it would romanize roughly as: DAH-TCHU-OO-EYE-FUU. The Japanese use katakana for foreign words, or words of foreign origin. So Dutch Wife is spelled out using the katakana, which is not possible using roman letters, thus the approximation. Isn't it just simpler then, to write 'Dutch Wife' in English?
