  1. The part of Ireland (or, occasionally, of other countries) where Gaelic (i.e. Irish) is the predominant vernacular language.

for the following reasons.

  • The areas are officially recognised by the government, and have been for almost 100 years.
  • The term may have once meant places in other countries, but certainly doesn't now.
  • The usage notes about the plural should be left, to indicate that the officially incorrect form is commonly used.
  • The quote given does not indicate the commonly understood meaning of the word.

Not sure if a second definition could be made, but the meaning you've given it is too uncommon to be the only def. --Dmol (talk) 08:00, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
