Kenning[edit]

I suppose it's ambiguous whether the kenning added here as an usex refers to the Valkyrie or to the common noun hlǫkk from which her name derives and which she personifies? — Mnemosientje (t · c) 11:32, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I believe it is, yes, and I'm just following the skaldic database on this ([1]). I think there might be an argument to be made that it's more likely that it refers to the Valkyrie, since that is more poetic, but in this particular case you are right, we can't be sure. With that said, Snorri writes: "Weapons and armor should be periphrased in figures of battle, and with reference to Odin and the Valkyrs and host-kings ...", and so I do think the more likely possibility is that it refers to the Valkyrie, and not the quite obscure word for battle, and the editors of the Skaldic database agree. @Mnemosientje Mårtensås (talk) 12:08, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
If other sources say so, we should probably follow them in such cases yes. Thanks for the clarification — Mnemosientje (t · c) 12:16, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
