Appears convincing, however, contradicts other approaches deriving the OHG word as loan from Latin. Not only here a source is urgently required. An anonymous writer in wiki behaving like god is unscientific, if not ridiculous. HJJHolm (talk) 14:27, 3 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

The etymology was edited by at least two users, myself and User:Leasnam. The two standard sources in German etymology are always Pfeiffer and Kluge, with which this etymology is in line. Regarding the question of a Latin loan: if it were one, it would predate the OHG consonant shift and the Germanic colonization of the British isles. We reconstruct such early words as Proto-Germanic, even if they may not have been part of Proto-Germanic in the strict sense (until 100 AD). So your doubt refers only to the further derivation of the word, which is not mentioned in this German entry. Kolmiel (talk) 19:36, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
