Etymology

It is stated that the origin being Alexander is a misattribution. The logic provided is that a phonological change which happened in Albanian couldn't have rendered ks into a k. Seeing that Αλέκος Alekos is a valid and common nickname for Alexandros in Greek, why should this be a nickname that developed within Albanian and with Albanian internal sound changes? Albanian could've very well loaned it from another language instead, like Greek. The statement should not be that it's a misattribution, but rather that Αλέξανδρος is an alternative and likely origin, as it was before @Lumbardhia 's edits! Albanian etymology

Would it be possible for Lekë to have come from *lúkʷos meaning "wolf"? I think it might relate as well to the other meaning of "Mountaineer". Muji28 (talk) 20:47, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

As far as I'm concerned, no, it wouldn't be. Albanian already inherited the PIE word for 'wolf' through the form *wĺ̥kʷos, so also inheriting its alternative form and it undergoing one giant leap of a semantic shift from 'wolf' to 'mountaineer' is untenable. There's also no way phonologically to explain a */u/ becoming /e/ in Albanian. So no, given these prime reasons. ArbDardh (talk) 21:44, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
