etymology[edit]

might this be related to Welsh llaeth (milk)? Wikipedia says that this derives from ma- + Cynlleth, which seems reasonable enough, but we have no entry for Cynlleth, no Welsh prefix ma-, and Im not sure we can really assume even those are the two parts. One site somewhere said it might be from moch yn llaeth "pigs in milk". I would normally throw such an explanation away but we haven't got much else to go on. See also w:Talk:Machynlleth. Giving it some thought, the ma Cynlleth- theory is believable, since English also has lots of morphemes that appear in placenames and nowhere else. Still, before I add it, I'd like to see what ma- is cognate to in the wider standard language. Also it would be good to break Cynlleth down, as well. Soap 17:42, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
