Small rodents are generally regarded as unpleasant pests, but mice and rats have additional cultural associations. Mice are meek, rats are sleazy. Neither quite captures the experience of wading through a site filled with poorly-written stories. And "Pit of Voles" just has a certain catchiness to it.
