It's from diff, from diff. Because of the High German consonant shift, the term or at least etymology seem indeed very dubious.

It's at least archaic (note also that they provided the genitive, which - outside of fixed expressions and names - occurs in very few dialects overall and in none in Bern). For comparison, the standard High Alemannic word is /t͡sɑː(n)/ with /t͡sɔː(n)/ being a possibility in some dialects (including some Highest Alemannic). The first consonant seems weird though.

I still got nothing. Asked somebody from Bern, they had no idea either. Not in my common sources either.
