Does anyone know the origin of the word - ayacut? Sounds similar to "Anicut" from Anaikattu in Tamil meaning a dam or a barrage. - KGN

Ayam in Sanskrit means  AREA,
Kattu :  Limit ( i guessed it based on Tamil/sanskrit)

so Ayakattu became AYACUT in english( by britishers) So basically it means Area Limit which will be irrigated by this water.

Kattu: in telugu means A restriction ( of water), a riverbank ind of thing) , 

we have a word in telugu " KATTUBAAATU+ means the way of restrictions...the restrictions self imposed by a group.. like apartment byeLAWS or our constitution...or like the internal rules of fishermen villages etc.

So Ayacut means  Area Limit.
Anakatta is the wall that is built to contain water..so anakatta is different from ayacut)
Ana : in telugu  two meanings: one is promise the other is Leaning.

I guess leaning i smore appropriate here. Ana katta means a wall to lean on ( water will be stopped by this)

so ANAKATTA : The wall where water leans on ( stopped by)
AYAKATTU :  The Area Limit where the water of this tank/River will be irrigating.
