Etymology[edit]

Can it be explained why the etymology is what it is (i.e., why it's called this)? 71.66.97.228 01:30, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

It is because of the foam on beer, which looks like spittle. When the only liquids you’ve ever seen were water, urine, blood, soup, and spit, a foamy beer stands out as unusual. —Stephen 14:55, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Aha--but there's nothing in the term meaning "liquid," just "the one"? 71.66.97.228 20:26, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, no liquid other than spit, and "the one that has". —Stephen 02:39, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

It can't mean "the thing" or "the substance" instead of "the one"? 71.66.97.228 04:21, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, it’s like a participle. It doesn’t mean thing, substance, or any other noun. It is made from "there is/are, it exists" plus a nominalizer. bizhééʼ hólóní means the one that has saliva, or the one that has spittle. —Stephen 05:19, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
