Possible missing obsolete slang sense: shill bidder at an auction, etc.

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) defines button as "a decoy, sham purchaser, etc. At any mock or sham auction seedy specimens may be seen. Probably from the connexion of buttons with Brummagem, which is often used as a synonym for a sham." Equinox ◑ 09:57, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
