The Oxford English Dictionary's first citation for this word is from the English novelist H.S. Walpole in 1919: "No young man likes to be discovered hidden behind a coat-rack, however honest his original intentions!" The second is from Stanley Kauffmann in 1953. The word is not primarily in US use. I get the feeling that some US editors indicate (US) because they know a word is used in the US, but have no confidence about its use outside the US.
