Among trans people, this has a sense "a person who has not yet realized they are transgender, or who is in the early stages of transitioning", supposedly from the notion that when an egg hatches a chick (or cock, when the term was, possibly later, also used in reference to trans men) comes out. However, it's hard to find examples because the more common senses of "egg" are also used in discussions of trans topics. All I can find is Little Fish, which uses the term in this sense, but in an attributive construction that isn't very illustrative:

She hated analyzing the whys of [not-out] trans girls. She had always hated it, and she hated how easy it had become; the bottomless hole of egg mode.
Someone else added this. I'm still having a hard time finding other citations because of heavy interference from the more widespread senses of "egg" also being used in discussions of trans people, but I know the sense is real and probably attested somewhere, so I'm not going to RFV it at this time. - -sche(discuss)17:23, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Just want to add, I am only directly familiar with use to mean ~"person who has not yet realized they are transgender" ("or is in the early stages of transitioning" and the ety were based on how various trans fora and sites defined it / etymologized it). - -sche(discuss)17:52, 26 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
