Missing items[edit]

  • Etymology: Direct borrowing or via Medieval Latin, Old Italian etc?
  • Definition: Chess-specific meaning?
  • Sense evolution: Did both chess-specific sense and general sense coexist in Persian, in Latin/Medieval Latin?

Inexact definition?[edit]

Read the Dictionnaire du Moyen français or even the French wiktionary page for this entry. While modern échec indeed refers to failure or obstacle, does the Middle French eschiec or eschec or eschac not refer to a prize or loot?
