There is some subtlety here that does not seem to be conveyed in the definition.

There is a negative connotation, which implies that something bad is happening to the object of exploitation There is a positive connotation, which implies constructive exploitation.

I don't feel like the complexity of this word is coming through.

Sense of "to forcibly deprive (someone) of something to which she or he has a natural right."
