Neologism?[edit]

It sounds like an adjective that _could_ exist, but I couldn't find any reference of it in the (limited) literature I have available. I suspect it may have come into use as a re-import from Japanese: "Hatoful Boyfriend [was originally released in 2011, this etymology's wiktionary entry dates from 2015] [...]. The title is a pun on the wasei-eigo word hātofuru (ハートフル, "heartful"), and the Japanese word hato (鳩, "pigeon", "dove"), as the game features pigeons and other birds as major characters. The game is set in a version of Earth populated by sapient birds" (English Wikipedia entry). Collins 1990 has no entry.

I have glossed the adjective as "nonstandard or NNES", which seems true based on a Google Books search; and added two citations. @J3133 You gave heartfully a Middle English etymology; are you sure? Equinox 09:31, 18 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox: The OED has quotations for heartful (adjective) from a. 1400 to 1997, which can be seen here. J3133 (talk) 09:35, 18 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
