Usage[edit]

I have seen important used often in the following medical context and am wondering if it is a convention I am unfamiliar with. "Dengue is the most important disease caused by an arbovirus worldwide". The paragraph goes on to describe the worldwide prevalence and symptomology of Dengue caused by the virus. I think the correct term to use in this context is common. Any feedback would be appreciated!162.129.44.19 16:38, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if it might be a translationism by non-native speakers? The French word important can mean « Qui atteint un niveau dont on juge qu'il est grand » ("reaching a level considered big"). —RuakhTALK 19:42, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That’s correct. The word important in this sense means weighty, significant. It does not mean or imply anything like beneficial, and it’s not the same as common. —Stephen 17:59, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meanings lacking[edit]

I, a non-native speaker, estimate many meanings are lacking in the article. --Daniel Polansky 11:59, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

more important(ly)[edit]

Both more important and more importantly occur at the beginning of a sentence in all varieties of standard English: More important (or More importantly), her record as an administrator is unmatched. Today, more importantly is the more common, even though some object to its use on the grounds that more important is an elliptical form of "What is more important and that the adverb importantly could not occur in such a construction. More importantly probably developed by analogy with other sentence-modifying adverbs, as curiously, fortunately, regrettably. https://www.wordreference.com/definition/importantly --Backinstadiums (talk) 10:43, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

4.4 Preceded by more or most: used as a kind of sentence adjective. Cf. importantly adv. 1. (This construction is discussed in R. Quirk et al. 1972 p. 255 ). http://oed.com/oed2/00113215 --Backinstadiums (talk) 20:15, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see Whoop_whoop_pull_up has now added one for NYC, but I don' agree with IPA for it. --Zaurus (talk) 23:37, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just heard this again on YouTube. I have added T-Flapping version per this common East-Coast pronunciation. --Zaurus (talk) 21:55, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
