John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) suggests another etymology: "Possibly an allusion to the dress assumed by our first parents after they were naked and not ashamed" (i.e. the Biblical fig leaf!) "or else an abbreviation of figure, in the references to plates in books of fashions". Equinox ◑ 20:00, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
