Term etymology[edit]

Note that it is unlikely that Nick Bostrom can be considered to have coined the term as the synonymous infohazard is attested since at least 28 March 2012, see the history of tag changes on the story at [1]. —The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 18:49, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Actually, looking at the history more I do think Bostrom coined the term. —The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 20:44, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I suspect Bostrom is the originator of the term; certainly he popularized it and it is generally attributed to him. There is an earlier usage than the 2011 Bostrom paper on LessWrong, a forum which belongs to the same general cluster of thought as he is: [2], but it's possible that poster took it from a preprint of the Bostrom paper or something. It's possible to find earlier uses of "memetic hazard" too, which is close semantically but not the same lexical item. 70.172.194.25 21:01, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, the earliest Wayback Machine grab of the pre-publication draft is from 2009. I think it's safe to say the 2010 LessWrong use was following his lead. 70.172.194.25 21:06, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
