@Fay Freak: I'm not clear on the history of how military ranks got into Swahili; from words like afande, it's clear that it's not the usual path of Omani Arabic. @Metaknowledge Persian جامدار (jâm-dâr) is a cup-holder. And there are quite some Swahili terms derived from Hindi here already. Alternatively it is Hindi जमादार (jamādār) of course. Maybe it came via English jemadar? Fay Freak (talk) 22:16, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

@Fay Freak: Steingass says the Persian word is used for some sort of soldier. Anyway, it could be from English, I really don't know. I've taken the habit of labelling all Swahili from Hindustani as being from Hindi, but it's just a convention. —Μετάknowledge^{discuss/deeds} 22:21, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
