@Mar vin kaiser Not exactly sure, perhaps mishearing? or fitting foreign words into Tagalog rules based of a mishearing? (like kumpil, the /r/ turned to /l/ but the /m/ disappeared from confirmar), or like the definition of ghost words, that previous Spanish friar dictionarists have passed onto one another, and they start using it to Filipinos thinking labi is not labio, and in turn got used by Filipinos. But The Spanish Overlay in Tagalog, by Cecilio Lopez mentioned it as such. If you can't access the article, this is what is says on that section

4.13. Ghost-forms

Sometimes the imitation of the S. (Spanish) model is so imperfect that ghostwords are created in T. (Tagalog), as S. al revés 'contrariwise, in the opposite or wrong way or direction', T. aldabis 'strike with the elbow', S. atarantado 'restless, wild, astonished, amazed', tarantá 'astonished, amazed, perplexed, rattled', S. Carmen 'Carmelite order', T. kalmén 'scapulary', S. confirmar, T. kumpil, 'confirm (in the Church)', S. hacer caso (de) 'pay attention to', T. asikaso 'pay attention to, busy oneself with', S. maravedi 'an old Spanish coin', T. beles 'half-centavo coin', T. kwartamoneda, S. portamonedas 'pocketbook' is a periphrastic doublet where T. kwarta- as a free morpheme meaning 'money', S. cuarto 'copper coin worth four maravedis' is the reproduction of S. porta-, and moneda means 'loose change, coins' T. labiq 'lips' and talino 'talent, smartness, cleverness' are perhaps ghost-forms of S. labio and talento.

We can just say in Wiktionary that the word may possibly be derived from these words instead of saying ghost word. Ysrael214 (talk) 23:58, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
