And what does the presyllable "lau" or the like mean? As far as I can guess from Estonian, it could have a meaning like "the day before" or "the day before the important one", since they use "laupäev" also in e.g. jõululaupäev (Christmas Eve), jaanilaupäev (the day before St. Johns Day (24. June)) and so on -- regardless which day of the week it is (this year jaanilaupäev was a Friday).--Nix schlecht (talk) 08:48, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yup, it means "bath" in Old Norse, but it means nothing in Estonian. I have no idea why jaanilaupäev and jõululaupäev are called like that. Strombones (talk) 14:43, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
