"Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

Additional[edit]

The 1975 U.K. feature film, The Likely Lads (a spin-off from the TV series, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads), has Bob Ferris (played by Rodney Bewes) say “in the chocolate box of life, the top layer’s already gone and someone’s pinched the orange creme from the bottom”. Later his opposite number Terry Collier (played by James Bolam) says “sometimes in the chocolate box of life it is necessary to give up the marzipan in order to keep the peppermint creme”. As this pre-dates the Forest Gump and Murakami mentions, I wondered if it was worth adding? I’ve only joined today so cannot yet edit this heavily vandalised entry. Quote from "Norwegian Wood" is wrong[edit]

The book Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, first published in Japanese in 1987, and in English in 1989, has the following: “Just remember, life is like a box of chocolates. […]

This Quote is wrong. It contains two mistakes.

1. (wrong)and in English in 1989, (right)and in English in 1989 by Alfred Birnbaum, and in 2000 by Jay Rubin.

2. (wrong)has the following: “Just remember, life is like a box of chocolates." (right)has the following: "Just think of life as your own private cookie jar." by Alfred Birnbaum and "Just remember, life is like a box of cookies." by Jay Rubin.

According to the translation of Norwegian Wood, this quote is attributed to Midori Raymonbo1975 (talk) 19:53, 18 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

He got the quote wrong[edit]

In the movie Forrest says "life is like a box..." But in the flashback scene of his mother on her deathbed she clearly says "life is a box..." The "is like" part is wholly attributable to Forrest Gump so when you say "momma always said, life is like a box..." you are quoting the movie correctly but the specific line actually attributed to momma is not what Forrest Gump would "like" you to think 🤔 2600:8801:C000:3D00:5488:DC7D:97BD:F92D 02:51, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

When it says "he" below I mean Forrest, not the op. — This unsigned comment was added by 2600:8801:C000:3D00:5488:DC7D:97BD:F92D (talk) at 02:53, 20 July 2022 (UTC).Reply
